Mission
AIDC will convene scholars, practitioners, policymakers, industry leaders, and community members to collaborate in exploring how AI both enables and threatens democratic agency, trust, and accountability. By situating contemporary developments in a broader humanistic perspective, we seek to provide much-needed context for understanding how AI is transforming the prospects for protecting the health of democracy from the ground up.
Through research fellowships, public events, and collaborative publications, AIDC advances humanistic scholarship while widening the public conversation about AI in ways that clarify both the dangers it poses to democratic self-governance and the opportunities it offers to renew and expand popular agency.
AIDC’s Vision
- Create a research network dedicated to exploring the way that emerging technologies are reshaping the day-to-day experience of democracy
- Act as a bridge between scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders to develop a human-centered understanding of the political opportunities and challenges raised by AI
- Provide the historical and scholarly context needed to understand what is genuinely novel about the prospects that AI poses for democratic societies
- Establish Georgetown University as a global center for humanistic research at the intersection of technology and democracy
